Description

Tasting notes

While the 1989 Cos d'Estournel will, in all likelihood, prove to be an outstanding wine, I would have to rate it behind the quality of the chateau's splendid 1982, 1985, 1986, and 1990. It is a medium-bodied, rich, concentrated wine displaying an impressive color, and a nose of super-ripe black fruits, toasty oak, and licorice. It tastes like a blend of the 1985 and 1982, although it is neither as elegant as the 1985 nor as powerful and opulent as the 1982. The finish is long, alcoholic, and lush. Anticipated maturity: Now-2009. Last tasted, 7/93.

Tasted at Robersons’ 1989 Bordeaux horizontal. The Cos d’Estournel 1989 has a dense, broody bouquet with typical Saint Estephe earthiness complemented by hints of seaweed and a touch of ox blood. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but rounded tannins, very good weight and concentration here, fine acidity and harmony with a nice build so that its finishes with a peacocks tails of mulberry, cedar and leather. This is maturing beautifully, lovely talcum finish. Drink now-2025. Tasted June 2010.

Last Tasted 8/92 Medium deep ruby, with an open-knit nose of black fruits and toasty oak, this medium-bodied, soft, silky textured Cos d'Estournel is remarkably evolved and delicious for such a young wine. As with most 1989s, the acid is low and the tannins are soft and unobtrusive. This wine will undoubtedly close up over the next several years, but as tasty and round as it is at present, I do not believe it will last more than twenty years.

The 1989 is a medium-bodied, rich, concentrated wine displaying an impressive color, and a nose of super-ripe black fruits, toasty oak, and licorice. The finish is long, alcoholic, and lush. There is every possibility that this wine will turn out to be as good as the chateau's memorable 1953. Anticipated maturity: Now-2008.

First tasted at Hakkasan with "G&T" in March 2004. Another gorgeous Saint Estephe from 1989 to go alongside Calon Segur and Montrose. A deep garnet colour with moderate aging on the rim. The nose is initially backward but gradually blossoms in the glass, with notes of wild strawberry, roasted herbs - almost animally. The palate is tannic, well-knit with good depth and concentration. A very "solid" wine with superb balance. An earthy character with a sweet mocha note underneath. Good length. Just about drinking now, but I would leave this another 5 years. Tasted again at the Farr dinner. I still adore this wine. A similar hue to the 1986. A very sweet nose of black cherry, liquorice and roasted herbs. Very well-balanced, tannic, but the fruits are so opulent and vibrant that is makes it far more approachable than the 1990. Dark chocolate on the finish. A voluptuous finish with a touch of espresso. A "complete" wine. Drink now, before considering the Cos d'Estournel 1990. Tasted September 2004.

The finish is long, alcoholic, and lush. There is every possibility that this wine will turn out to be as good as the chateau's memorable 1953. Anticipated maturity: 1992-2008. Tasted six times. Consistent notes.

The 1989 Cos d'Estournel is very good, but uninspiring. The 1989, although good, does not live up to expectations given the terroir and the vintage. Its deep ruby color is followed by a spicy vanillin, curranty nose, medium body, excellent depth, but a monolithic personality. It possesses neither the concentration nor dimension of the exceptional 1990. The 1989 possesses some hard tannin in the finish, but it is well-integrated with the wine's ripe fruit. Look for this wine to drink well for the next 15+ years.

About the Producer

Located in the village of Saint-Estephe on the left bank of Bordeaux, France, Chateau Cos d'Estournel (also known as Chateau Estournel) is a second growth in the 1855 classification and is now recognized as one of the "super second growths". The history of Château Estournel is long and special, dating back to the end of the 18th century, when Louis Gaspard d'Estournel inherited a plot of land called "Cos" in the village of Saint-Estephe in 1791. He thus began to develop his winery. The property is located on a gentle rocky slope, "Cos" meaning "little rocky hill" in French, and the founder's surname, "d'Estournel The name of the winery is the result of the founder's surname "d'Estournel". Louis had a passion for wine and devoted himself to improving the quality of the winery, selling it several times due to financial pressures, only to buy it back after paying off his debts. In 2000, Michel Reybier and his family purchased the estate and have continued to write a new chapter for Château d'Estourde with the same passion and innovation. The vineyards of Château d'Estour cover 100 hectares near the mouth of the Gironde River. The mild maritime climate, the uniform sunshine and the smooth air flow contribute to the excellent terroir. The vineyards are covered with deep soils rich in gravel and limestone, with excellent drainage. Currently, two-thirds of the vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with the remainder dominated by Merlot and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines used for the production of the main wine is about 55 years, and there are also some valuable old vines left in the vineyard, which can be 80 to 100 years old. In 2008, the new vineyard of Château d'Estour was inaugurated, the first in Bordeaux to be fully equipped with the gravity-flow method of winemaking. This is the first winery in Bordeaux to rely entirely on gravity flow to transport the grapes and the wine. The winery is currently equipped with 84 temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters of different sizes, which allow the vinification of different plots and lots of grapes separately. Château d'Estour produces wines in the typical style of Saint-Estèphe, with concentrated and elegant flavors, rich layers, firm bones and a combination of complexity and finesse. Its main wine, Chateau Cos d'Estournel (Saint-Estephe, France), is a regular high scorer on the lists of major wine critics and wine reviewers. In addition to the main wine, the estate currently produces two red wines, including the secondary wine Pagodes de Cos (Saint-Estephe, France), and one white wine.
